Mannamead ladies do just enough to claim victory

IN Division 2, Mannamead B’s Linda Trebilcock and Sue Gale played well against Plympton A’s first pair of Nicky Trevaskis and Fiona Crutchley.

Linda’s consistently reliable play combined with Sue’s volleying and drop shots saw them take the first set 6-3 and then go up 5-0 in the second set.

Nicky and Fiona regrouped but it wasn’t enough to stop Linda and Sue taking the second set 6-3.

In the second match, Linda and Sue were 3-0 up against Alison Miles and Alice Wildgoose when Alice pulled a calf muscle running in for a drop shot from Sue. Unfortunately, it was a bad injury and Alice wasn’t able to continue.

Mannamead’s second pair of Sue Newberry and Megan Gore, who were playing together for the first time, had long rallies and many deuce points but were unable to convert these into games. Mannamead just did enough to win 44-41.

In the local derby between Yelverton B and Tavistock A, the first two matches were very tight but, unfortunately, Tavi’s Hilary Picton injured her arm in the first set, but carried on to finish the first rubber. Sadly she was not able to play the second match and Yelverton took the honours 48-43.

Plympton B’s first pair of Suzanne Sykes and Jane Wilson came back from 5-2 down to force a tie-break against Menheniot A’s second pair, but with the light fading, Menheniot’s Tamsin Hemming and Lucy Matthews played some great cross court shots to win the tie-break and claim the match 68-28.

In Division 1, Sarah Jane Pritchard and Ruby Watson took the only match for Devonshire A when they beat Katherine Rowe and Roanna George 6-3, 6-0, but Mannamead A won 57-30.

The match between Devonshire B and Ivybridge A saw Gemma Wright and Gemma Ward play two championship tie-breaks, winning one 10-2 and losing one 10-7 as Devonshire took the victory 62-34.
