Shadow work and pensions secretary Liz Kendall said millions of parents are worried about how they will feed, clothe or keep their children warm over the festive period, let alone how they will buy them presents.
Work and pensions minister Mims Davies acknowledged it has been a "difficult time" for some, before pointing to Government support.
Speaking at work and pensions questions in the House of Commons yesterday, Ms Kendall highlighted a Unicef report that found child poverty levels in the UK have risen by a fifth in recent years, ranking worst among some of the world's richest countries.
