NEW RULES WILL INCREASE PENALTIES
CARL EVE
Parents warned on holiday fines

PARENTS and carers who try to save money by taking their children out of school during term times to avoid inflated summer holiday costs will face bigger fines.

A letter outlining the new “National Framework for Penalty Notices” for school absences has recently been sent to parents and carers by Plymouth City Council, alerting them to the changes which will come into effect on August 19 this year – slap bang in the middle of the school summer holidays.

The new rules – which were brought in by the previous Conservative Government and must be applied by every local authority – will see an increase in the penalty fine from £60 to £80 if paid within the first 21 days. If the fine is not paid in that time, it will rise to £160 – if the offending parents or carer cough up the cash within 28 days of the fine being issued.
