A PETITION calling for the threat to close train station ticket offices to be lifted is nearing its target to trigger a Parliamentary debate.
The petition to Parliament says the Government should "require train operators to keep ticket offices".
The Herald, in partnership with sister newspaper The Western Morning News, is opposed to the closure of well-used and much valued station ticket offices in the Westcountry and calls on the region's train operators to abandon the proposals.
We urge readers to have their say through public consultation, which ends on Friday, and to also support the independent petition.
The controversial proposals would see railway ticket counters in Devon and Cornwall phased out by the end of next year, in line with projected closures across England.
The independent petition to Parliament argues saving ticket offices and platform staff will "help maintain health and safety standards and customer information".
As of yesterday, a total of 81,140 people had signed the online petition. Once it reaches 100,000 signatures the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.
