A REMEMBRANCE service for one of Plymouth’s greatest military heroes was held on Saturday – more than 150 years after his death.
Sergeant Andrew Henry RA won the Victoria Cross on November 5, 1854, and it was the 170th anniversary of his heroics which was honoured by a large assembled gathering of serving and retired gunners, in the company of Lord Mayor Tina Tuohy and Colonel Richard Horner of the Royal Artillery Association.
Ably supported by ACF cadets from Mutley and Crownhill, the service marked the 170th anniversary of Sgt Henry winning the Victoria Cross.
The service of memorial was conducted by ACF Cadet padre the Rev Graham Hamilton with a bugler from 6 Rifles playing the ‘Last Post’.
It was during the Crimea War in 1854 that Sgt Henry faced severe opposition, with Russian troops outnumbering the British position – forcing both sides ultimately into a bayonet battle.
