PLYMOUTH speedway promoter Mark Phillips was delighted with how a meeting with the club's loyal supporters turned out last week, but said there is still some way to go before he can confirm that the club will ride again in 2024.
After it emerged that a group of hardcore supporters were doing what they could to help raise money to keep the sport alive in the city, it was mutually agreed to hold a meeting at the Railway Club in Laira to discuss the future of Plymouth speedway and what was needed to move forward in 2024.
Phillips recently stated the need for a new commercial manager to help bring sponsorship and revenue to the club and he is delighted to confirm that Paul Swarbrick has stepped forward and taken on the role. And after the success of last Friday's meeting with supporters, in which sponsorship came forward on the night, he has issued a rallying call to the business fraternity of Plymouth and the wider Westcountry community to help plug the gap, ensure the club can ride again next summer and keep the sport alive in Devon.
"Paul has come on board - voluntarily, I may add - and we had a very successful meeting on Friday," Phillips said. "Paul approached me and he is really conscientious. I couldn't ask for anyone better to be fair.
"We put out an appeal for someone to take over the job and he approached me and he's been following Plymouth speedway for a couple of years now and he's stepped up for me and doing an excellent job.
