Weather can't stop final games being played
The Herald|April 04, 2024
THERE were only a few games left to be played in the very last week of the RBC Brewin Dolphin Mannamead Winter League and despite the weather’s best attempts to put the players off from finishing their games, all the last few games got played and positions top and bottom of the leagues were finalised.

Needing six points in order to move up a place in the table, Andrew Regan and Pete Ireland made a flying start in their final league match against Arash Dinari and Lawrence Hay. Andy’s quickness at the net and Pete’s court coverage and ground strokes overwhelmed Arash and Lawrence and Andy and Pete dominated the first set winning it 6-2. That proved to be the wake up call for Arash and Lawrence who were determined to finish the season unbeaten, and they therefore upped their game in the final two sets, with Lawrence hitting good groundshots and Arash stealing in at the net to turn the game on its head, winning the final two sets in quick succession 6-1, 6-1 and leaving their unbeaten run intact. Andy and Pete were pleased to get the points they needed to move them up a place in the table.

James Driscoll and Mark Skerton played John Putman and sub Lee Horton in Men’s B but Mark and James were too strong on the night winning 6-2 6-1 6-2.

Alan Mayes and sub James Spurgeon had a close game against Bob Verey and Andy Weymouth in Men’s A but Alan and James were more consistent and put away their chances to win 5-6 6-4 6-3.

Chris Welland and Varun Philip beat Bob Verey and Andy Weymouth 6-3 6-2 6-2.
