Taiwan's president Lai Ching-te has insisted it would be "impossible" for mainland China to become the self-governing island's motherland, claiming that Taiwan has older political roots.
âIn terms of age, it is absolutely impossible for the Peopleâs Republic of China to become the motherland of the Republic of Chinaâs people,â Mr Lai said. The Peopleâs Republic of China governs mainland China, whereas the Republic of China administers Taiwan and several smaller islands.
âOn the contrary, the Republic of China may be the motherland of the people of the Peopleâs Republic of China who are over 75 years old,â Mr Lai said.
