THE Mangaluru city recorded a significant rise in drug-related offences in 2024. With 1,090 cases of drug consumption and peddling reported within the police jurisdiction, it marks a sharp increase from 713 cases in 2023 and 363 in 2022. The police attribute the rise to a marked intensification of action against drug-related crimes.
The 2024 statistics include 1,002 drug consumption cases and 88 peddling cases, leading to the arrest of 1,372 individuals, including four foreign nationals. Among those arrested, 1,211 were drug consumers, and 161 were peddlers.
"This represents a 45 per cent increase in arrests, including three Nigerians who played a significant role in the drug supply chain," stated the Mangaluru city police.
Consumption cases rose by 62 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year. Key areas with higher incidences of drug use included Kavoor (94 cases), Ullal (94), Mangaluru North (93), Kankanady Town (82), and Konaje police station (80). To combat repeat offenders, the police initiated strict measures, filing cases under the Goonda Act against three individuals, externating 28 people, issuing bonds for 123 others, and forfeiting bonds in 18 cases.
