ON the first day of New Year 2025, I witnessed an unusual scene in Udupi, as staff at the Bairampalli Gram Panchayat (GP) did not turn up for duty on Wednesday. Starting from the data entry operator to the clerk-Vasanthi; the bill collector, Sumana; and the water operator, Manohar Naik, who alleged that a GP member abused them verbally. They also said that despite their complaints about it to Udupi taluk panchayat Executive Officer (EO), Vijaya; Zilla Panchayat (ZP) CEO, Prateek Bayal, their grievance was not heard.
