SIR, In the article "Europe in decline?" published today, Ash Narain Roy's argument has merit. Europe has traditionally relied on its "soft power" promoting culture, supporting human rights, and providing aid to influence other countries and spread its values.

This approach helped Europe build a reputation as a leader in supporting democracy, justice, and cooperation. However, in recent years, a rise in ultra-right-wing movements and tougher attitudes towards migrants have shown a gap between Europe's self-image and how it's seen globally.

Right-wing groups in many European countries have been pushing for nationalist and antiimmigrant agendas, which goes against Europe's ideal of being open and inclusive. This raises questions about Europe's moral authority when its internal politics seem at odds with its values.
