I had the opportunity to provide support to student J who sought school counselling after experiencing a panic attack during his first month as a freshman in the institution where I worked. His lecturer contacted his parents to ensure he was safely taken home.
This episode came as a surprise to his parents, as they described J as a confident and successful student during his time in secondary school. They had not anticipated that he would face difficulties adjusting to a new learning environment.
Parents play a crucial role in their child's emotional and mental well-being. In my years as a school counsellor, I have seen how important it is for children to feel safe and supported in their learning environment. When children are in a supportive climate, they become engaged and motivated students. However, as the holidays end and students prepare to return to school, they may be grappling with internal struggles that can manifest in various ways.
Some children may experience nervousness, anxieties or difficulties that make going back to school feel daunting. It is crucial that parents do not dismiss these changes as mere jitters or attention-seeking behaviour. There may be more delicate issues at play, and the child may require additional support to overcome or manage these challenges. Parents play a key role here in providing the necessary support for their child's emotional and mental well-being.
According to a recent study conducted by the National University of Singapore, it was found that one in 10 teenagers in Singapore grapples with at least one mental health disorder.
Moreover, approximately one in three teenagers reported experiencing internalised mental health symptoms such as depression, anxiety and loneliness.
