Chitradurga/Bengaluru: The pontiff of Murugha Mutt in Karnataka’s Chitradurga, Shivamurthy Swami, was arrested late Thursday, nearly a week after he was accused of sexually assaulting two minor schoolgirls in a hostel run by his monastery. The 64-year-old seer, booked under the Pocso Act and the SC/ST Act, was arrested at 10.20pm from his mutt by Chitradurga police. The arrest came following public outrage and protests by dalit organisations over the delay in the arrest of the seer, who is the head pontiff of the prominent 17th century Lingayat mutt in the state.
