Gone are the days when sons tip-toed around fathers while sneaking out for a date, or daughters felt uncomfortable discussing period issues. It's all about candid conversations and confidence building now. In the digital age where information is superfluous and even dangerous, new-age fathers are doing a fine job of carrying on with the most difficult conversations with their kids right from relationship and dating woes, to sex education and body awareness.
DADS ARE READY TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP
Financial advisor Ravi S recalls the days his 14-year-old daughter struggled with menstrual cramps but hesitated to reach out to him for comfort. That's when he decided to take the first step. "One day I went up to her and opened the conversation. She was a little taken aback because until then she discussed all this only with her mother. However, after that day's talk, she doesn't hesitate anymore to come up to me and ask for a medicine, a hot-water bag or anything else that might comfort her,” he says.
It was a similar experience for 22-yearold communication student Ajitesh Bhattacharya, an out and proud member of the queer community. While Ajitesh felt comfortable coming out to his mother and sister, he was scared to share his story with his dad. “He was a strict disciplinarian for us when we were in school. I was shocked when he came to me and said no matter what I choose, he would stand by me along with Mom and didi. I hugged him and cried. Since that day, I’ve had the confidence to own my sexuality publicly,” he shares.
