Strays may starve: Plea in SC against HC order

Mumbai: Contending that a recent high court order may have the opposite effect than intended in controlling stray dog menace, an animal welfare organisation has moved the Supreme Court to challenge a bar placed by a bench of the Bombay high court on volunteers feeding stray dogs on the streets of Nagpur, reports Swati Deshpande.

The HC order will effectively “subject the stray dog population in the entire city of Nagpur to starvation and make them even more violent and ferocious as opposed to the actual intent sought to be achieved by passing the order”, says the special leave petition (SLP) filed by Janice Smith of Animal Welfare Trust, an NGO, and

its chairperson Manoj Oswal. Neither the NGO nor Oswal are parties to the petitions before the Nagpur bench of the HC where the matter is scheduled for hearing next on November 23.
