New Delhi: Reacting to Delhi High Court's order setting aside its plea to allow it to start the doorstep delivery of rations, Delhi government said on Thursday that it will decide the next course of action soon. "We will closely study the high court order and any further steps in this matter will be decided only after that," said a government source.
The ration dealers, however, were happy with the decision and said the employment of at least 4,000 people had been saved by the court order. "We welcome the court's decision. Justice has prevailed," said Saurabh Gupta, secretary, Delhi Ration Dealers Association.
While the Aam Aadmi Party government had conceptualized and begun work on the scheme after being elected in 2015, it was in March 2018 that the Delhi cabinet approved it and forwarded it to then lieutenant governor Anil Baijal for approval. The face-off between the elected government and the Centre through the LG began soon after.
"The scheme has always been very close to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has worked with the poor and those staying in slums and saw them being deprived of their ration. Doorstep delivery was planned to ensure that their subsidized foodgrain was not siphoned off," said a Delhi government official.
The file sent to the LG was returned, triggering a war of words between the elected dispensation and the Centre’s nominee. While Kejriwal said the LG had rejected the proposal, the latter said he had advised the state government to refer it to the Centre since there were issues about implementation.
