'If Republicans control Congress, it will be good for America, for chances of negotiations on Ukraine, and for India'
The Times of India|November 10, 2022
US midterm polls are going down to the wire with the Democrats performing better than expected even as the Republicans pick up crucial seats. With the final composition of the Senate and the House yet to be determined, the fate of the Biden presidency and, by extension, of Washington’s policies for the world hangs in the balance. Patrick Basham, director at Democracy Institute, Washington, spoke with Rudroneel Ghosh about the impact of the election on American democracy, politics and foreign policy:

'If Republicans control Congress, it will be good for America, for chances of negotiations on Ukraine, and for India'

● A Republican red wave was expected during these polls. But the race has turned out to be a tight one. What’s your take on this?

Although the Democrats may lose control of both Houses of Congress, they have done better than expected. Through efficient grassroots organisation and superior campaign fundraising they have maximised turnout among their supporters, which has negated much of the Republicans’ advantages on key issues, such as the poor economy, and President Biden’s unpopularity.

How likely is Donald Trump to run for presidency in 2024 now especially after Ron DeSantis’s victory in Florida?

Trump was always running in 2024 regardless of how the Republicans, including Florida governor Ron DeSantis, performed in the midterms. Although the American media seek to drive a wedge between Trump and DeSantis, there is an understanding between the two politicians that DeSantis will not challenge Trump for the Republican nomination in 2024. In return, DeSantis expects to be Trump’s vice-presidential running mate. DeSantis’s tremendous showing in the midterms makes him an even more attractive choice as Trump’s running mate. Of course, it also makes him more attractive to those Republicans voters who do not favour Trump’s return to politics.

Did the Democrats misread the mood of the electorate and focus too little on the economy?
