New Delhi: The hazardous air in the city is posing a major threat to the health of children who are more susceptible.

Over the last one week, there has also been a surge in the number of children brought to hospitals with complaints of breathing difficulty and persistent cough.

Dr Bijoy Patra, a paediatrician at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, said along with cases of seasonal flu, the number of respiratory illnesses has gone up. “We are witnessing more asthmatic complications and nasal congestion nowadays,” he added.

At Fortis Hospital, post-Diwali respiratory tract issues have become predominant in the OPD as well as admissions. There is a 40% rise in OPD footfall for this issue, said paediatricians.
