Wall Street's biggest succession drama took another turn on Tuesday.

JPMorgan Chase named Jennifer Piepszak as its new chief operating officer and said Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon's longtime top ally Daniel Pinto is planning to retire. Neither is now considered a potential successor to Dimon, narrowing the field but leaving the race still open.

Who will run the nation's biggest bank and succeed the man widely seen as his generation's best banker is one of Wall Street's favorite questions. Dimon, 68 years old, has long avoided publicly naming a successor, and for years demurred even putting a time frame on when he would leave, despite persistent questions about his plans.

Dimon has said he plans to retire as CEO by 2029 and that he would likely remain chairman of the board for a period after that, meaning his influence over the bank could persist well beyond 2029.

Tuesday's changes whittle down the number of Dimon's direct reports in line to take the top job.

Now holding the role of leading speculative bet to succeed Dimon as CEO is Marianne Lake, who runs the consumer operations and Chase Bank. Troy Rohrbaugh and Doug Petno will now run the commercial and investment bank together and are considered contenders as well.

Pinto, 63, has been the emergency stand-in candidate, including taking over briefly when a heart issue sidelined Dimon in early 2020, and Piepszak has been considered a potential candidate in the future.
