Spellbinding Existential Songs

In early 2021, Canadian folk-rock band the Weather Station released "Ignorance," what seemed to be the right album at the right time. It was written before the Covid-19 pandemic and its subject was climate change, but something about hearing a politically charged yet personal collection of songs in a moment of global crisis struck a chord. It was one of the year's most acclaimed records and wound up near the top of many critics' lists, which was an unexpected place to find the band. The group, led by 40-year-old singer-songwriter Tamara Lindeman, had been issuing recordings since 2008, and though it generally received good notices it seemed destined to be a low-key project with a small number of committed fans.

But "Ignorance" was a breakthrough sonically as well as thematically. Over Ms. Lindeman's past few releases, she had been collaborating with a growing cadre of musicians, and her arrangements thickened considerably and took on a jazzy, improvisational character. Though her work had obvious threads that were there all along a writerly eye for telling details, her clarion voice-2021 kicked off a new phase in her artistry. A 2022 album, "How Is It That I Should Look at the Stars," was built from songs from the "Ignorance" sessions that were given quieter, more intimate arrangements. Her seventh LP, "Humanhood" (Fat Possum), out Friday, returns to the fleshed-out sound of her breakthrough, and finds her turning her focus inward, with frequently stunning results.
