How much can truly have changed in 19 days? Richie Laryea and his Canada teammates are adamant that a world has been altered, a new dawn ushered in, all changed, changed utterly.
We’re big Richie fans over here. A man who unfailingly empties himself for the country’s cause, an Energizer bunny of a player with more than enough skill and guile to go with the fearless will, the bottomless determination. His Copa America displays ought to have won him many new fans.
But perhaps the question was just slightly off. Instead of wondering how much Canada has changed since its Copa America opener against Argentina on June 20, what if we wonder how much Jesse Marsch’s team needs to change to have a chance of turning the biggest game in Canadian men’s history into a we-shocked-the-world night?
“The last time we played them was just under 20 days ago and we are a completely different team,” Laryea responded to the original question ahead of Tuesday night’s semifinal epic at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. “They know how to prepare for us, we know how to prepare for them. I expect a little bit of a different match.”
