That is how then 23-year-old Aiden Pleterski, self-proclaimed “Crypto King,” described how he learned about financial markets, foreign exchange and cryptocurrencies.
It was 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 24, 2022 and Pleterski was answering questions from the lawyer for the accounting firm overseeing his bankruptcy after investors claimed he had defrauded them out of tens of millions of dollars.
Speaking over Zoom, Pleterski said he had begun dabbling in investments in 2015 while a student at Henry Street High School in Whitby.
While playing computer games such as “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” and “The Elder Scrolls,” he’d noticed some in-game items were discounted if purchased with cryptocurrency.
So he started purchasing bitcoin and other currencies, using birthday money and his paycheques from working as a baseball umpire, loaded onto prepaid credit cards.
Then his interest in trading cryptocurrencies was piqued when he saw others posting about it online.
“Some individuals as well posting luxury cars, posting luxury lifestyles,” he said at the time.
They claimed to have made their money from crypto.
Today, the Whitby native is at the centre of an alleged Ponzi scheme, with Durham police announcing Wednesday Pleterski, 25, has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime for allegedly defrauding an unknown number of unsuspecting investors while flaunting the luxury lifestyle of which he had dreamed.
