There certainly hasn't been a lot to get excited about this year as far as the Blue Jays are concerned, but a second straight outstanding outing by rookie starter Yariel Rodríguez in Seattle on Saturday at least gave their fans something to look forward to.
The Jays' 5-4 win over the Mariners in the Pacific Northwest only moved them to within eight games of the final playoff spot in the American League. They're still nine games under .500 at 40-49 and it would take an incredible run over the next three weeks to avoid becoming sellers at the July 30 trade deadline.
While 2024 may well wind up being a lost season, Rodríguez's back-to-back dominant starts show that he could be a big piece of a retooled/ reloaded/"whatever they're going to call it when the selling starts" 2025 club.
Coming off a spectacular Canada Day outing in which he limited the Houston Astros to a run on two hits over 62/3 innings, the blue-eyed Cuban was even better Saturday in picking up his first major-league win. He allowed only one hit over six innings: a little duck snort by Luke Raley, looped over short, to lead off the fifth.
The 27-year-old Rodríguez walked a pair against six strikeouts, the free passes coming back-to-back with one out in the fourth. An incredible diving, sprawling catch by Daulton Varsho, after which he doubled off the lead runner, followed the walks and ended that threat.
