As you may have heard, the Eras Tour is no ordinary concert experience.
Since it kicked off last May, Taylor Swift's globe-trotting megatour has made history as the highest-grossing tour of all-time, while earning acclaim for its astounding technical scope. The career-spanning perfor mance runs more than three hours and includes 44 songs, divided into 10 acts that correspond to Swift's 10 studio albums.
But much of the tour's magic lies in its incredibly ambitious world building and jaw-dropping production design. During "Bad Blood," Swift sets a projection of the "Lover House" on fire, engulfing the set piece in flames. In another viral moment, Swift swan dives through a tiny opening in the catwalk, and appears to swim beneath the stage as a large wave crashes above her.
The tour is a "cinematic experience," explains Ethan Tobman, 45, a Canadian multi-hyphenate and the creative director for the Eras Tour. "It's immersive in a way that is closely related to where my heart and where my brain finds inspiration the explosive fire of traditional, cinematic, narrative storytelling".
Hailing from Montreal, Tobman has in recent years become something of a secret weapon for pop stars looking to elevate their visual storytelling. In addition to his production design for major films ("Room," "The Menu"), he's worked on more than 100 music videos, among them Beyoncé's seminal "Formation" - a video Rolling Stone named the greatest music video of all time - Swift's "Cardigan" and "Anti-Hero," Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left to Cry," and Kendrick Lamar and SZA's "All the Stars."
"I used to think of music videos as one-offs or individual experiences," Tobman explains. "But now I don't think of 'Formation' as a video, and I don't think of 'Cardigan' as a video... They are part of this long, incredible dialogue that I've been privileged enough to have with those two women in particular, but really with female pop artists in general."
