1 WOUT VAN AERT PROPELS JUMBO DOMINANCE
After winning the competition, points wearing the yellow jersey and winning multiple stages of the Critérium du Dauphiné in June, Wout van Aert prophesied that "the strength of the team is even bigger an advantage than in the last years, and I believe this will be key in the Tour this year."
He was proved right, with Jumbo becoming the first team in 25 years to top the general and points classifications, while they also scooped six stage wins and the King of the Mountains jersey.
Van Aert had shown last year he could win sprints, ace TTs and compete in the mountains. This year he left no doubt, all while helping Jonas Vingegaard to the win. A truly amazing ride.
2 ISRAELPREMIER TECH RESCUE THEIR YEAR
It is no exaggeration to say that the first six months of Israel-Premier Tech’s season were a bit of a disaster. The WorldTour team had won just two WorldTour races all season, the first coming at the end of April, and as a result were one of the squads mired in a relegation scrap.
Not much was expected of them at the Tour. That all changed on stage five on the cobbles, as Simon Clarke triumphed from a reduced breakaway to take the team’s first ever Tour stage.
That would have been enough, but the new-found confidence garnered from that first win meant the results kept coming. First, Chris Froome was third on Alpe d’Huez, his best finishing position since his horror crash three years ago, and then into Saint-Etienne, Hugo Houle was third also.
