Spencer Reynolds gives the inside story on the creation of Fujikura's groundbreaking shaft technology VeloCore and explains how it benefits golfers of every ability

GAME CHANGER

The complex design of modern graphite shafts involves some serious feats of engineering, with none demonstrating this better than VeloCore by Fujikura. The brainchild of its engineering team, VeloCore arrived in 2018 in Ventus driver shafts and now features in the Ventus TR range and Axiom iron shaft. In fact, Fujikura has a carbon composite shaft with VeloCore for almost every club in the bag. But what makes this technology so groundbreaking and how do golfers benefit?

“It’s like baking a cake - you’re trying to use the best ingredients in the right way to make the best end product,” says Spencer Reynolds, Fujikura product and brand manager. “The idea was to integrate very high-tonnage, ultra-high-modulus Pitch 70 Ton carbon materials along the entire length to reduce torque, improve feel and add stability, yet still offer different bend profiles to suit different golfers. With graphite composite shafts, you have simple designs where you use one or two materials, or you can be very intricate, as with Ventus and Axiom, and use a bunch of different materials and plies in various combinations. Ventus and Axiom are at this end of the spectrum, using a lot of different materials and trying to get very specific points to deliver specific performance characteristics. It’s what makes it a premium product.”
