Breaking Barriers BHARAT CHAVAN

Bharat’s pivotal role in leading Bharti Vidyapeeth to victory at the recently concluded Khelo India inter University games showcased his exceptional skills on the rugby field. In fact, he emerged as the top scorer of the tournament, contributing 10 crucial points in the final match. Recognising his talent, Bharat has been selected for the national camp of the Indian rugby team, exuding confidence in his ability to represent the country at the international level. With an impressive collection of approximately 15 medals from junior and senior national championships, Bharat’s journey recently received further recognition when he was bestowed with the prestigious Shiv Chhatrapati award by the state government.

Hailing from a rural area in Karnataka, Bharat’s father used to work in a fish market in Colaba, Mumbai until paralysis forced him to quit. Trapped in a cycle of crises, Bharat’s mother also fell victim to paralysis, leaving the entire burden of the family on his young shoulders. In the absence of viable alternatives, Bharat took on the demanding job of working in the fish market, where early mornings and uncertain income became his daily reality. However, he remained undeterred, dedicating himself to physical fitness by visiting the gym and attending rugby practice sessions thrice a week.

“I have to go to the fish auction market early at about 3 am so that I can get a good income, but it’s very uncertain. Sometimes I don’t get sufficient money even for a cup of tea. After finishing the job at around 7 am, I go to the gym and do other physical fitness,” said Bharat.
