DONS AND GILLS SLAY TOP DOGS

THERE were shocks aplenty as the Carabao Cup roared back into action in midweek – with five League Two sides taking the scalp of Championship opposition.

One of the biggest shocks saw Neil Harris’ Gillingham dump out Southampton. Robbie McKenzie (two) and Ashley Nadesan netted for the Gills, while Saints only had a late Carlos Alcaraz consolation to cheer.

AFC Wimbledon produced a stunning late rally to knock out Coventry and earn a trip to Chelsea. Matt Godden’s first half penalty put the Sky Blues ahead, but Omar Bugiel rifled home on 86 minutes before fellow sub – and Dons debutant – Ryan McLean brilliantly volleyed high across goal at the back post for a dramatic injury time winner.

Crewe produced a massive upset as they triumphed 5-3 on penalties at Sunderland after a 1-1 draw. Luke Offord headed Crewe in front in first-half injury time, but Chris Rigg drew the Black Cats level on 64 minutes. In doing so, he became the youngest goalscorer in Sunderland’s history (16 years and 51 days).

However, it was Crewe who had the last word as they netted all their spot-kicks, while on-loan Liverpool keeper Harvey Davies, 19, saved from Pierre Ekwah.

There was also shoot-out glory for Salford at Preston. In the 90 minutes, Connor McLennan’s double (5&38 mins) gave the Ammies a 2-0 lead but Ben Woodburn (44) and Duane Holmes (50) drew North End level. Salford won 4-2 on pens.

Hull also got a surprise on home turf. Oscar Estupinan gave the Tigers a third-minute lead from close range, but Doncaster’s George Miller (15&61) struck twice to turn the tie on its head.
