It means the Owls go into tomorrow evening’s televised match at home to Hull City – who are currently in the playoff zone – looking for a fifth win in eight games.

Despite that run, they remain rooted in the relegation zone, six points from safety.

Marvin Johnson’s first-half goal earned the points at Preston but Wednesday were forced to hang on after George Byers was sent off late on.

Rohl said: “Our defending in and around our box was brilliant. We’ve put in a great performance and done really well to get a big three points.

“The performance was not the best at times, mainly due to some poor positioning I suppose, but the players really fought all night and that was fantastic to see.”
