TASTY TERRIERS TAKE A BITE OUT OF UNITED'S YOUNG GUNS

Knowing they needed to beat the Red Devils' youngsters to leapfrog them into second place in Northern Group F, the Terriers made the breakthrough courtesy of Ben Wiles just before the half hour.

Victor Musa levelled three minutes before the break, but Rhys Healey restored Huddersfield's lead midway through the second half.

Late goals from David Kasumu (90 minutes) and Tom Lees (90+7) put the icing on the cake.

The Terriers went through alongside group winners Doncaster.

In Southern Group C, Miles Leaburn (70) scored Charlton's winner as they made it a perfect haul of nine points with a 1-0 home success against EFL newboys Bromley, who bowed out.

Cambridge also advanced.

Stevenage ensured their passage from Southern Group D alongside section winners Peterborough with a 1-1 draw against Gillingham.

Josh Andrews gave the Gills a 26th-minute lead, but Boro got back on terms via Dan Kemp midway through the second period.

Gillingham won the resulting penalty shoot-out 5-4 to pick up an extra point, but still finished bottom.

In Northern Group C, Tom Watson proved to be Wigan's hero as they earned their ticket to the knockout stages with a penalty shoot-out success against Nottingham Forest U21s.

The sides drew 0-0 to both finish on four points and it meant that whoever won the shoot-out would finish runners-up and secure their passage to the last 32.

An inspired Watson saved all three of Forest's spot-kick as the Latics ran out 3-0 victors.

In the same group, winners Morecambe lost 2-1 at home against Carlisle, who still finished bottom.

Hallam Hope gave the Shrimps a 16th-minute lead, but Carlisle hit back courtesy of Freddie O'Donoghue (75) and Ben Williams (78) to sign off on a high note.

In Northern Group G, Chesterfield guaranteed they would finish top with a 3-2 home success against Grimsby.
