The Audio Foundry Automotive Audio Development Platform

It’s rare to find genuine innovation in the audio tech field, and even rarer to get an opportunity to contribute to a groundbreaking project. Back in June 2022, at the Audio Engineering Society AES) Automotive Audio Conference in Dearborn, MI, surrounded by gleaming luxury demo cars, DSP Concepts and Tymphany set up a live demonstration in the corner of the room. Automotive OEMs and Tier 1s began lining up to step inside the brushed aluminum acoustic hulk known as the Rig, powered by Audio Weaver and displayed on a big screen perched in front of the Rig’s windshield.

As Tymphany’s Matt Marchese put it, You could see it, sitting in the Rig with these OEMs and them just having this OMG moment. It was an eye opening moment, even for us.” Soon after, the Audio Foundry was born.

To understand the vision and the scope of this totally new offering for the automotive industry, I sat down with the Audio Foundry team, which includes Matt Marchese Automotive Business Unit Leader, Tymphany), Evan Bunner Engineering Services Team Leader, Tymphany), John Whitecar VP of Product Management, DSP Concepts), and Steve Ernst Head of Automotive Business Development, DSP Concepts).

Naturally, each member of this team has a particular vision of the project, as with different pieces of the puzzle. John Whitecar calls Audio Foundry a way to accelerate audio development.”

Steve Ernst agrees with this fundamental definition but expands on it calling it a place, specialized equipment, and services for OEMs to come to and accelerate their audio development.”

Matt Marchese provided the more practical vision. The Audio Foundry is also synonymous with the partnership and collaboration between DSP Concepts and Tymphany. It’s also synonymous with the space, and soon to be spaces, available at a global level for Tier 1s, OEMs, and technology providers.”

A Trip Down Memory Lane

The history of tube application began with radio receivers, the telephone system, and cinema sound systems. Later, tubes began to be used in home stereo systems, and in amplifiers for electric guitars. Today, the primary markets for tubes are high-end stereo and musical instrument amplifiers. In this article Richard Honeycutt remembers his first contact with \"starter\" guitar amps as a teenager, progressing throughout his days as a semi-pro musician
