DR. OISHIMAYA SEN NAG speaks with DR. ANISH ANDHERIA, President of the Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT), India, a conservation NGO working in and around 160 Protected Areas across 23 states in India, one of the country's top conservationists. A Carl Zeiss Conservation Awardee, and member of NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority), State Board of Wildlife of Maharashtra and Jammu&Kashmir, Gujarat State Lion Conservation Society, and many other prestigious government and non-government bodies, Dr. Andheria is a foremost authority when it comes to discussing issues related to wildlife conservation. In this article, he addresses several questions raised over the years about the role of wildlife tourism in conservation in India.
Is wildlife tourism good or bad for wildlife conservation?
Wildlife tourism has both good and ugly sides. It plays a significant role in shaping people's mindsets. It ignites people's inquisitiveness about the wilderness and their passion for protecting the same. Exposure to pristine landscapes and iconic species gives birth to wildlife lovers who might metamorphose into future conservationists. Wildlife tourism also brings income to local communities, motivating them to protect wildlife. Wildlife tourism also acts as a vital alternative livelihood source for the communities, discouraging them from practising harmful activities such as poaching to earn a living.
However, like any industry, wildlife tourism also has adverse effects. When not regulated well, such tourism can backfire and create indelible scars by damaging ecosystems, fragmenting corridors, and hampering the future of species.
What regulations would you recommend negating the harmful effects of wildlife tourism?
Many things need to be done, but I am enlisting some of the major points here:

National Parks Of India
India is blessed with a rich tapestry of biodiversity that is both a natural heritage and a national treasure. The concept of national parks in the country traces back to the late 19th century when the importance of conserving wildlife began to take root in the consciousness of the colonial administration. The first national park in India, Hailey National Park (now known as Rajaji National Park), was established in 1936, marking a historic commitment to wildlife conservation. The post-independence era saw an exponential increase in protected areas, primarily driven by a need to conserve Indiaâs unique flora and fauna threatened by rampant industrialization and urbanization.
