Food prices have rocketed nearly 10% milk and butter have gone up twice as much by 20%. There's more penny pinching to come as market research firm Kantar say our food shopping bills could go up £450 a year even if we don't buy more.

However, despite supermarket price rises, the really crazy thing is that the average household throws £700 of food in the bin every year! So here's how to make your precious trolley load last longer...

Think before throwing food in the bin. In most cases it's not that the food has gone off but just that we're sticklers for those dates on the label. "Best before" dates are about quality, not food safety, so eating food after this date won't hurt you, whereas "use by" dates are about food safety.
