How close do you get to your kids' partners when they're dating? I've found this surprisingly complicated. It's the sort of thing you give little thought to until one of your kids splits up with someone you've become attached to. And the partner just disappears, often without as much as a goodbye.
It's so awful you swear you'll never again get close to your kids' romantic attachments till you see a commitment. I recall my mother telling me she didn't really want to get close to my partners till I'd indicated she's "the one". It seemed a bit cold-hearted, but I now at least understand why she took that view.
