Straight out of THE 90S
WOMAN - UK|March 02, 2024
With this decade’s fashion back on the high street, Jo Blood and her teenage daughter Izzy put their style to the test to see who could wear it best
Straight out of THE 90S

When I was in my 20s, I lived in dungarees, slinky slip dresses and chunky platforms,’ says Jo. ‘But seeing my old fashion favourites back in the shops, and in my daughter Izzy’s wardrobe, has been a bit of a surprise.

‘I’m not convinced that everything I used to love will become a favourite now I’m in my 50s,’ she admits. ‘I wouldn’t dream of squeezing into a tiny crop top – and I think Izzy would be mortified if I did. But that doesn’t mean I can’t rock the 90s the second time around, after all, it’s my generation that set the trends Izzy is loving now.’

So we put them head-to-head to find out, who wears it better?

THE SLIP DRESS

IZZY, 18, SAYS Blue is my favourite colour to wear because it makes my red hair stand out, so this is definitely an outfit I’d wear again. I think the pattern of Mum’s dress really suits her, but I prefer my chunky trainers to her heels for a modern look.

JO, 51, SAYS Here’s a look I remember! A tight T-shirt with a slip dress over the top was a staple in my going-out wardrobe, paired with heels, of course! My main struggle with this outfit is that I was a lot slimmer then. These days, I prefer a more structured style of dress, to flatter my curves. Plus, I forgot how much heels can hurt! I love the blue dress on Izzy, and think the trainers are a good idea.

IS THERE ANYTHING MORE NOSTALGIC THAN CHRISTMASES PAST?

Do you remember the anticipation before the big day, pondering endlessly about what should go on your Christmas list? I would lovingly write two or three things down, pop it into an envelope and leave it by the fireplace to be wafted up the chimney like something out of Mary Poppins.
