Leaving work after a busy day of appointments, I answered my phone as I got into my car. It was a call I was expecting – after all, I received the same call from the same person every day. ‘Your dinner is almost ready,’ said my dad, Arthur. Dad was always looking out for me and was so protective. His calls were more to find out where I was as opposed to letting me know about dinner. But I didn’t mind. In fact, I quite liked feeling looked after. But I wasn’t a teenager or in my early 20s. In fact, it was 2010, I was 41, and back living with my parents for the first time in almost two decades.
The last time I’d lived at home with my mum, Theresa, and Dad was in 1993. Aged 23, I moved out to make a home with my fiancé, and while I loved the independence, I did miss home comforts like Mum putting fresh sheets on my bed every week and home-cooked meals.
