Azelaic acid is the latest beauty must-have for achieving that elusive glow.
But it has actually been used by dermatologists for decades as a gentle way to treat lots of skin issues.
Azelaic acid is produced by a yeast found naturally on our skin, and while it's called an 'acid', it works differently to AHAs or BHAs because it has a soothing, calming effect. 'In clinic, I use it extensively because it's so well-tolerated,' says skin expert Dr Sam Bunting. 'In adult acne, many women also suffer from skin sensitivity, so their tolerance of retinoids and benzoyl peroxide can be tricky. Azelaic acid is a lifesaver.' Used alongside retinoids, azelaic acid can help build the skin's tolerance and prevent irritation, but it's also brilliant at targeting pigmentation, melasma and redness, and can bring rosaceaprone skin back under control. Look for products with a concentration of between 5% and 20% for best results.
