Royal biographer Tom Bower reveals just what kind of king Charles will be

After years of his family making headlines for all the wrong reasons, King Charles III will want to steer a steady ship, says royal biographer Tom Bower.

While his books about Charles painted a shocking picture of a spoilt and petulant prince, the monarch has since tried to shift the public's perception.

"I do think that he has stopped all the self-indulgence - he has stopped the extraordinary, expensive lifestyle," Tom tells Woman's Day. "Before my book The Rebel King came out [in 2018], he was very quick about firing people. But he realised he had to keep people on side. Charles, now, is very much more careful. But it's very hard to follow the Queen's act. And unlike the Queen, he comes with a huge track record of controversy and animosity. So, he's got a tough job."

FAMILY FALLOUT

Tom thinks it would be a mistake for Charles to try to reinvent royal life.

"The Queen got it absolutely right. The monarch must be uncontroversial and reassuring - and always be seen to be giving service," explains Tom.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla's role will be to keep her husband "sane and happy".
