While teaching college students, I interact with them informally at times. One fine day, our conversation went this way and it made me rethink some basics of life.
Me: "Why are you studying in college?"
"So that I get good grades"
"How will that help you?"
"It will land me a good job."
"What's the advantage of that?"
"I'll earn good money."
"What will that result in?"
"I'll buy everything I need."
"And when you earn more money?"
"I'll be able to have everything that I desire."
"And then?"
"And then, I'll be happy."
"Anything more?"
"No, that's all."
So ultimately, the goal is happiness. Happiness is the new rich!
Once we understand our goal, we can start working towards happiness much earlier in our lives. In the words of Dalai Lama, "Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions." If we visualise happiness as a treasure kept in a locked box, there are a number of keys that help in releasing the happiness from the box to us.
