Grandparents have always played an important role in upbringing of children across cultures and countries. They have often been the source of our support, unconditional love, and unlimited pampering.
With the changing times, however, the nature and dynamics of their roles and responsibilities towards their grandchildren have changed. Over the past twenty years, many people have an increased the responsibility of their grandchildren due to changes and issues in families and society. In the joint family system, there was always a pool of caregivers and the grandparents alone were not responsible for the care of the children. With the advent of nuclear families and the need for both parents to work, the role of grandparents has steadily changed over time. The first major change is the provision of child care.
A recent survey shows that by 2025, 2.2 million people in the UK will live in multi-generational homes. This means that grandparents make up a large portion of the population, and in many families, they will be the closest caregivers for their grandchildren.
This is an important role in helping to keep families stable and raise well-balanced grandchildren.
Grandparents, mostly grandmothers, are the major providers of child care for preschool children, especially infants and toddlers, when both their parents are working.
