during the Fall of Saigon in April 1975. Mayor Crombie shared her vision for the city of Mississauga and spoke about her role as a female leader.

Another year is about to go by. Culture Magazin is very happy and honoured to be able to accompany you over this time. We hope you can see the silver lining amid another difficult year caused by the pandemic. The vast spread of love in the community and the strength of family ties have kept us going. But above all, we recognize that health is our most valuable asset. As vaccination rates around the world gradually increase, we have more hope for a better new year.

Our cover story profiles Andrew Phung, a Canadian actor of Vietnamese and Chinese descent. He charmed audiences with his role as Kimchee Han on CBC's award-winning sitcom Kim's Convenience. Keep your eyes open for the new show that he cocreated and stars in.

The Covid-19 pandemic is gradually being controlled across Canada and the Canadian economy is on its way to reopening. There are forecasts on settlement trends, the scarcity of essential human resources, inflation, price increases, and wages. These concerns are addressed in this issue of Culture Magazin.

Our inspirational story features a Vietnamese-Swedish lady, Denise Sandquist, who was adopted by a Swedish couple at the age of one month. Her journey finding her biological mother also helped her with an entrepreneurial innovation – creating a dating application called Fika, designed specifically for Vietnamese people.

This issue also introduces books where celebrities have revealed some of their deepest secrets. The East Meets West story discusses an issue of concern to Asian families, how to raise children between cultures. The travel section offers beautiful pictures and experiences at Đá Dĩa Reef, a 200-million-year old masterpiece created by the eruption of Phú Yên. The Year of the Rat, 2020, was the first year of a new round of 12 zodiac signs. It was considered to have many new beginnings, and so it did. These new beginnings, or changes, were unforeseen and led people to adapt to unprecedented situations. 

Everything happens for a reason. It seems that the difficulties of last year might help us transform and begin the Year of the Ox with much luck. The hope is for a year full of prosperity and health for everyone. 

In this first issue of the new year, Culture Magazin is pleased to introduce to you some interesting and useful articles. The first pages of the magazine feature information about the real estate market in the next two years and AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine. There is also a piece about Debby Nguyen, a young, passionate writer, who has explored both Vietnamese and the world’s traditional medicines. 

Our cover story chronicles the experience of singer Huong Tram and her first Tết holiday in the United States, away from her home country. 

In our Travel section, we take you to a place that is equally poetic and sacred – Bích Động Pagoda in Ninh Binh. We also go to Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick’s hidden gem, and the lovely Caribbean island of Barbados. 

Read through the Food section and you’ll encounter familiar dishes for families on the first days of the new year.

Economic activities are still subject to restrictions to ensure safety, and some occupations are on hold due to lockdowns, but there is the hope of returning to a new normal soon. The last leaves of autumn have fallen and winter is coming. This season will probably be more difficult than previous ones because the pandemic is adding to the cold. It approaches us every day, forcing us to be alert and strictly implement safety measures including keeping a safe social distance from each other.

Culture Magazin’s Print Edition is Back! 

When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our lives, I remembered the words of author and motivational speaker Vivian Greene, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning how to dance in the rain." Each of us is practicing to adapt to the "new normal" created by this virus.

I recently read in the Washington Post that the editors-in-chief of prestigious law journals at the top 16 law schools in the United States are all women. This is an historic first. Heading into 2020, we see the roles of women changing. They are now CEOs and world leaders, activists, artists, deans of architecture schools, and hold many other top positions. This is a major breakthrough and shows that women can be strong leaders. 

In this March issue, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, Culture introduces you to a few exceptional young women. Read their inspiring stories and learn how they are trying to influence the world with their talent. They include our cover feature, Miss World Vietnam 2019, Luong Thuy Linh, ambitious writer Gari Nguyen, perky German vlogger Brittanya Karma, and the creative and charming supermodel Jessica Minh Anh.
