This issue is special for us and for our favourite
photographer, James Carey Lauder. As you can see
by our cover, we spent a special evening at a photo
shoot at Lauder’s downtown studio for 2020 Canadian
Olympic Triathlete Tyler Mislawchuk.
Mislawchuk, a 25-year-old Winnipegger, was the
first Canadian to reach a podium at an International
Triathlon Union World Series event when he finished
third in Montreal on June 29. Then, in Mislawchuk dug
even deeper in Tokyo in August, winning the ITU World
Series event on pretty much the same course that will
be featured at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He completed
the race in a time of one hour 49 minutes and 51
seconds, four seconds ahead of second-place finisher
Casper Stornes of Norway.
With that Mislawchuk became one of the pre-Olympic
favourites to win a gold medal for Canada, but make
no mistake, he takes nothing for granted. “There
are just too many good athletes to pick a winner in
Triathlon,” said. Mislawchuk. “There are a dozen guys
who could win. It will be hot and humid and it just
depends on who has the best day.”
As we say good-bye to 2019, sports fans all over the
world get set for an Olympic year. No one is more
attuned to that reality than Mislawchuk.
Meanwhile, we have three other great stories in this
edition. We introduce you to baseball star Brittney
Langlais, elite handball/soccer player Jazmiera Ditter
and the father-son basketball duo of Burke and Kai
Toews. As well, we’ll give you a heads up for Sport
Manitoba’s Game Day in January, a look at another

September arrived and the temperatures dropped. It’s not
autumn yet. Not until the 23rd. And yet, just as it does every
year when August becomes September, it already feels like a
brand new season.
When Labour Day is over and the kids head back to school,
everything changes. Baseball tournaments are virtually
over for the year. There are only a few days of horse racing
remaining. Ultimate and softball end and even some
football leagues start getting set for the playoffs (the
women’s league, the WWCFL, is over by July). It cools off
dramatically and much of the time it’s dull and rainy until
the middle of the month.
Maintenance crews get the ice ready – in those arenas that
actually took out the ice for the summer – the gyms fill
up and beach volleyball becomes indoor volleyball in the
blink of an eye. Manitoba’s basketball leagues get set for the
new season, ball hockey becomes ice hockey, track moves
indoors and soccer becomes futsal.
Still, here at SportsLife Magazine, we have to say good-bye.
In this year’s Fall Edition, we get set for the badminton
season, for basketball and indoor volleyball, but we also
talk triathlon with Oak Bluff’s 2020 Olympic favourite
Tyler Mislawchuk, learn about 96-year-old record holding

Hail to the  Champions
As summer arrives in Manitoba, it’s a great time to get out 
to the lake and play some golf, partake of a little slo-pitch or 
head to Assiniboine Park to catch the cricketers. 
Summer is a different time in a town that spends almost 12 
months of the year curling, speedskating and playing hockey. 
Of course, that doesn’t mean that here at SportsLife we aren’t 
still interested in hockey, speedskating and curling.
Quite the contrary. When our curlers and speedskaters are 
being inducted to various Halls of Fame and our hockey 
players have world champion Ball Hockey competitors, there 
is still plenty of reasons to keep those winter sports at the top 
of our to-do lists.
In fact, we live in a province loaded with national and 
international champions that many of our citizens have 
never even heard of. And in many cases, they are champions 
in sports not everybody knows.
In this issue of SportsLife, we’ll introduce you to Angie Cerilli, 
Julianna Thompson, Connor Roulette, Paul Kastes, Tyler 
Teasdale, Dawson Pasternak, Nate Goodbrandson, Rory 
Neill, Cole Plowman and Owen Weihs, who just won World 
Ball Hockey Championships. You’ll get to know Emily Potter
who is off to the Pan Am Games with Canada’s National 
Basketball team, Jennifer Saunders who won her 24th 
national racquetball title, Marissa Naylor who won another 
Canadian 10-pin bowling championship, plus national 
bronze medal boxer Justice Harborne, world ball hockey 
bronze medalist Remi Laurencelle; triathlon’s ITU World 
Series bronze medalist Tyler Mislawchuk; and a kid named 
Nico DeGuzman who won six gold medals at the national 
karate championships.
We also feature some of Manitoba’s finest young football 
players... 


A new
season
For the most part we’re back outside. Sure, the spring basketball,
volleyball and hockey players are still inside their
gyms and rinks, but baseball, softball, soccer, ultimate,
golf and, of course, beach volleyball competitors are back
outside, taking advantage of a Winnipeg summer – the best
summer there is anywhere on the planet.
So, in this, the May/June Edition of SportsLife Magazine,
we pay homage to both the indoor and outdoor stars of
Manitoba sports.
In this edition, we’ll introduce you to Eric Loeppky, the
young man from Steinbach, who just might be the next
big thing in Canadian volleyball. We certainly expect he’ll
be wearing the uniform of Team Canada when our nation
takes on the best volleyball teams in the region at the 2019
NORCECA Men’s Championship right in Winnipeg from
Sept. 2-7.
We also honor Manitoba’s university athletes of the year –
Nikala Majewski (volleyball) and Seth Friesen (volleyball)
at Brandon University; Narcisse Ambanza (basketball) and
Shae-Lynn Dodds (soccer) at the University of Winnipeg;
and Kelsey Wog (swimming) and Simon Berube (track) at
the University of Manitoba.
We’ll also introduce you to the brand-new commissioner
of the Winnipeg High School Football League, a guy who is
certainly well-known in the football community, the Nomads’
Jeffrey Bannon.
As well, we have a tribute to the newest inductees into the
Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and the spring inductees
of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, plus a look at competitive
Dodge Ball, the 2019 Skate Canada Manitoba award
winners, the upcoming Assiniboia Downs season and the
newest soccer recruits at the University of Winnipeg.
It’s another jam-packed issue of SportsLife. So sit back, relax

Spring is
Coming!
Honest.
It Is.
I have it on good authority that spring is coming.Officially, spring begins on March 20, at 4:58 CDT, but I certainly realize that might be hard to believe. Especially now that the white snow has turned to dirty brown concrete and the temperature is still below zero. However, based on nearly 70 years of experience, I’d say spring is right around the corner. That is, if 6-8 weeks is right around the corner.
With spring comes the commensurate change in our sporting passions. We put the skates and skis away and bring out the bats, balls and golf clubs. Indoor volleyball becomes (real) beach volleyball. Basketball heads outside. And indoor soccer turns into intense, but invigorating runs on the outdoor pitch.
In this issue of SportsLife, we’ll say good-bye to winter and welcome spring with open hearts – and a touch of flood related
anxiety. We’ll take a look at the 2019 Canada Winter Games and Manitoba’s gold-medal finishes in speedskating (Tyson
Langelaar and Alexa Scott), Nordic para-skiing (Jesse Bachinsky) and archery (Austin Taylor). As well, in this issue of SportsLife, we pay tribute to U of W basketball stars Faith Hezekiah and Narcisse Ambanza, introduce you to Water Polo goaltenders Claire and Serena Bredin and diver Serena Buchwald. As well, we have a tribute to the newest inductees into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame, news of a new curling bonspiel honoring the great Bob Picken and plenty of track and field, ringette, football and basketball.
It’s not only our spring issue, but our awards issue, as well. It’s another jam-packed issue of SportsLife to welcome spring. And yes, it will get here. Eventually.

The Holiday Season is almost upon us but that doesn’t mean the sports world slows down. In fact, during the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, it might be busier than at any time during the year. There are basketball and hockey tournaments, plenty of ringette games and skiing events and without question, there will be curling. It’s Canada, after all.
In this, our 2018 Holiday Edition, we want to celebrate the great performances of the past couple of months and at the top of the list is curling. We have two terrific stories from two of the most iconic people in Manitoba sport.
1. Dr. Cal Botterill, the sports psychologist who has worked with Canada’s Olympic Team and half a dozen NHL teams, introduces us to a Grand Experiment: How four successful skips, Kerri Einarson, Brianne Meilleur, Val Sweeting and Shannon Birchard, came together to form a super team.
2. And the great Resby Coutts brings us a report on the national mixed curling championship held right here in Winnipeg.
As well, we will introduce you to the newest class of the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame, the two Manitoba athletes who represented Canada at the Youth Olympics in Argentina and two of the greatest badminton players ever to be trained
right here in Manitoba.
We’ll also meet the three players from the WHSFL who made Canada’s U-18 football team, follow Marissa Naylor’s the marvelous year on the links and alleys and say good-bye to the retiring commissioner of the Winnipeg High School
Football League, Rick Henkewich. 
We’ll pay tribute to Bisons Basketball Coach Kirby Schepp and Team Canada, 90-year-old badminton players Stefan Carter, swimmer Kelsey Wog and Wesmen soccer star Shae-Lynn Dodds.

Back to School, Back to the Gridiron
It’s September, the kids are back in school and that means the schedules for football, soccer, volleyball and basketball are set and ready to go. The sports seasons for both the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba are underway and the Winnipeg High School Football League is actually not far from playoff time.
Speaking of the WHSFL, our September/October edition for 2018 will introduce you to some of Manitoba’s best and brightest young athletes and our cover boy, Vincent Massey Trojans’ 6-foot-8 defensive lineman Kyler Filewich, sets us up for an issue that is full of champions, award winners and young people who are likely to succeed in their chosen sports for many years to come. 
For instance, we’ll meet Carson Lee, a 17-year-old wrestler from Flin Flon who is already one of the best in the country, a pro volleyball player from the University of Winnipeg named Josh McKay and Victoria Tachinski, a track star at Penn State University who has just been named winner of the Michener Award.
In this issue of SportsLife, we also pay tribute to some of Manitoba’s all-time greats: A 2018 inductee into the International Softball Hall of Fame, the indefatigable Shelly Paton, a fitness star who isn’t in her 20s anymore and some horse racing veterans who helped Assiniboia Downs enjoy one of its most successful meets. 
Oh yes, and we also pay tribute to the winner of the Gold Cup, the last great race of the season at the Downs; the stars of the World Masters Ultimate Club Championship that was held right here in Winnipeg; and Manitoba’s successful rowers who did so very well at the prestigious 2018 Henley Regatta.
So sit back and enjoy. We hope you meet someone you didn’t know before and learn about a sport you’d never thought about before. Winnipeg is blessed. It’s also Canada’s Place to Play.

School’s Over, Let’s Get Outside
It’s that time of year here at SportsLife when we do our best
to be out of doors and away from our devices as much as
possible.
It’s also the time of year when our athletes ditch the rink
and the gym for a little softball, baseball, rugby, football,
ultimate, beach volleyball and golf. It’s summer, in
Manitoba we try to make the best of it.
In this, the latest edition of SportsLife, we honour the stars
of the 2017-2018 indoor season – our best volleyball players,
a basketball program called Ignite (our cover subject), the
2018 Induction Class of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame
and the best badminton players in the country.
However, we also fete the thousands of participants in the
2018 Manitoba Marathon – the 40th Anniversary, by the
way – and a rising star at Assiniboia Downs. We set you up
for the 2018 Winnipeg High School Football League season
with the entire league schedule and pay tribute to three
former WHSL stars who will represent Canada at the World
Junior Championship this month.
And we also let you know everything you need to know
about the 2018 World Men’s and Women’s Masters Ultimate
Club Championships which will be held at Maple Grove
Rugby Park and Investors Group Field at the end of July.
It’s a busy month and a busy summer and before you head
back indoors in September, enjoy Manitoba’s outdoor
sporting season and take a copy of SportsLife with you to
the lake.

Summer’s Coming, Sport Changes
Summer is coming and, as always, changes are on the
horizon. We move outside. Volleyball becomes beach
volleyball, basketball heads to the outdoor courts and
instead of playing hockey, some our province’s best young
players – Bradley Schoonbaert, Riley Shamway, Brody
Moffatt and Ashton Anderson – move outside to play ball.
Our May/June edition for 2018 will introduce you to some
of Manitoba’s best and brightest young athletes. Our cover
boy, Pembina Valley Orioles pitcher Seth Staple, a beautiful
action shot taken by Dantin Reimer, sets us up for an issue
that includes a complete preview of all eight MJBL teams.
As well, we’ll meet Lucas Meyer, a basketball-volleyball who
has decided to play volleyball at the U of M next season
and Erin Valgardson, a middle-distance runner who is off to
North Dakota State in the fall.
They are young, gifted and ready to compete and they
speak volumes about the types of athletes we get to watch
and enjoy in this province.
In this issue of SportsLife, we pay tribute to Manitoba’s
best badminton players and bowlers, basketball coach
Kirby Schepp and his star from Team Canada Justus Alleyn,
Glenlawn grad Emily Potter who is off to the WNBA and
Manitoba’s 2017 Athletes of the Year.
Oh yes, and we also pay tribute to the latest inductees
into the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame, the KJHL
champion Peguis Juniors and 16-year-old volleyball star
Erika Vermette.

Well, That was fun
The 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics are now history and for Manitoba, those Games were fun.
Right off the top, the young woman on our cover, Kaitlyn Lawes from the St. Vital Curling Club, teamed up with former Winnipegger John Morris, to win gold in Mixed Doubles Curling.
Then Winnipeg’s own Heather McLean, finished 14th in the women’s 500-metre speedskating event in a time of 38.29 seconds and then she finished 25th in the 1,000 in a time of 1:17.25. Then our hockey players got going and in the end, six of them won medals. You’ll meet them, if you haven’t already, on page 20.
But there is a lot more to this edition of SportsLife Magazine. You’ll meet the six Manitoba players who will represent Canada at the 2018 World Junior Football Championship. A load of those guys – Shae Weekes, Cole Adamson, Brody Williams and Andreas Dueck – are already playing university football and playing at a very high level. We have some baseball, boxing, plenty of University of Manitoba Bisons news and from the University of Winnipeg. We have a couple of great soccer stories from the Manitoba Blizzard and the Golden Boy Youth Tournament. We also have photo pages featuring U of W Men’s Basketball by Kelly Morton, the WIT Basketball Tournament by James Carey Lauder and the Canada West Track championship by Jeff Miller.

The Winter Olympics are Almost Upon Us
Best of the season to everyone and all of us here at SportsLife hope you had a  wonderful holiday. Now back to sports. Yes, I’m being a little facetious, but we really don’t have much time. The 2018 Winter Olympics are almost upon us and here at SportsLife, we’re set to go. The Canadian Centre for Sport Manitoba has partnered with us to bring the best stories of the best athletes Manitoba has to offer the world and three of them – Bailey Bram, Brigette Lacquette and Jocelyne Larocque will play for Team Canada in the women’s hockey tournament in PyeongChang.
There will be more. Although we won’t have any curlers in Korea, we will have a male hockey player or two and we can hardly wait for that announcement. As well,  Heather McLean is a member of Canada’s long track speed skating team and will, hopefully, compete in PyeongChang.
The Olympics will take place from February 9-25, 2018, in PyeongChang, South Korea, about 126 kilometres due east of Seoul. The long track speedskating team will hold their tryouts this week at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, but here in Winnipeg, we’re obviously cheering for Heather to earn her spot in the 500 and 1,000-metre events. 
Besides our latest trio of Olympic athletes, we’ll also introduce you to Kieran Benson from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, the Player of Year in the Winnipeg High School
Football League; world champion martial artist Akira Wojciechowski; up and coming football star Tavin Parani and University of Arziona track and cross-country runner
Jennie Baragar-Petrash.
You’ll also learn about two special teams: baseball’s Winnipeg North Pirates and the provincial Pee Wee lacrosse team, both teams were champions in 2017.

SUMMER IS PARADISE IN OUR TOWN
Despite a number of tolerable winters over the past few years, life still isn’t easy in Winnipeg in January. However, snow, cold, a challenging drive and a penchant for cocooning, is worth the suffering when summer arrives in Manitoba. The lakes, the parks, the big sunny sky, they’re all the things that make summer in our city something close to paradise.
And this year’s summer edition of SportsLife celebrates all the things that  make summer great – Shaw Park, Assiniboia
Downs, Investors Group Field, the Manitoba Marathon, the golf courses and all the wonderful people. Our own Lisa Lysen has a terrific story about Rock Steady Boxing and the two sensational people – Brandt Butt and Sheri Larsen-Celhar – who make the program a civic treasure. We also introduce you to Canada’s finest female bowler, Winnipeg’s Marissa Naylor, who also happens to be one of the three top female golfers in the province. As well, we take you to the Downs where 46-year-old Peruvian jockey Adolfo Morales calls Winnipeg his second home and is tearing up the track this season. We introduce you to Wes Darvill, the talented third baseman from Langley, B.C., who has not only become one of the best ball players on the Goldeyes, but also one of the best in all of independent baseball thanks to an athletic
trainer from Winnipeg. And we get you up-to-date with all the latest inductees to Manitoba’s and Canada’s various Sports Halls of Fame. Just to round things out, we have full Manitoba Marathon coverage, full coverage of the Canada-Costa Rica soccer friendly featuring Winnipeg’s own Danielle Scott, a pictorial look at the Fearless’ female football team and all the latest amateur sports news from the U of M to the national gymnastics championships.

This issue of SportsLife Magazine is dedicated to stars. I must admit, it didn’t really start out that way. Publisher OV Suvajac and I sat down as we always do and looked at the most pertinent, most newsworthy and most interesting amateur sport stories in Manitoba and came up with our list. Turns out, the list was full of some of the finest athletes in the region. In this issue, you’ll meet Casey Schouten, the incredible University of Winnipeg volleyball player who is off with our national team in Quebec. You’ll meet Wyatt Tait, the high school basketball star and.....

Now that the Olympic Games are held every two years instead of every four years, it’s easy for things to sneak up on us......
Championship events in recent months.  Already, athletes have been travelling to PyeongChang for various test events, and in February, our top long track
speed skaters competed for the first time on the Olympic ice at the Gangneung Oval. Manitoba’s own Canadian champion, Heather McLean was there and in this edition
of SportsLife we’ll introduce you to the next great Canadian female speed skater, a young woman following in the blades of Cindy Klassen and Susan Auch.
As well, thanks to the Canadian Centre for Sport Manitoba, we’ll offer up a photo page of the Manitoba athletes to watch at the Korean Winter Games. Granted, not
all of them have earned places on our national Olympic team yet, but every one of them has a good chance over the next few months. In the meantime, we’ll also introduce you to basketball star Emmanuel Akot, seven top young football players
heading to the U of M next fall, a marvelous boxing program at Winnipeg’s United Boxing Club and a junior speed skater named Tyson Langelaar.

All of us here at SportsLife Magazine hopes everyone had a wonderful
Holiday Season. However, we also know those holidays must come
to an end. That means it’s January and it’s time to start playing games
again.
In this edition, we want to celebrate the great performances of the past couple of months. At the top of the list is the brilliance of University of Manitoba swimmer Kelsey Wog who won a silver medal at her first World Championship in Toronto in December. Wog is a
provincial treasure and just could be Canada’s next great swimmer.
As well, two of Manitoba’s great competitive curling  teams – Team Jennifer Jones and Team Reid Carruthers – won their respective Canada Cup titles in December and earned spots in the qualifying event for the 2018 Pyongchaeng Olympics. Rower Emma Gray, who
has emerged as the fastest junior rower in the nation, earned national funding through RBC. And University of Manitoba football star, Geoff Gray, is now among the highest-ranked players eligible for the 2017 CFL draft. 
We’ll also meet University of Winnipeg wrestler Maddison Haney, get to know Winnipeg’s Jason Park, the latest member of Canada’s national U-18 football team’s coaching staff and take a look at the stars of the recently-completed Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s 2016 Showcase at MTS Iceplex. 
We’ll pay tribute to Coach Sukhvir Singh’s Attack Basketball program and the University of Manitoba men’s basketball program that just won its second straight Wesmen Classic championship. We’ll also have a chat with Andreas Dueck and Tong King, two of the players who will represent Manitoba at the 2017 Canada-USA U-18 Football Championship Game at Walt Disney World on Jan. 28. As always there will be plenty of Ringette news, so sit back, relax and join us for another edition of SportsLife Magazine. The New Year is upon us. It’s time to play.

SportsLife is Manitoba's amateur sports magazine.
This is where sports fans will meet the Olympians of tomorrow and the medallists of today, and they all compete right here in Manitoba.
