The need to provide robust mobile battlefield communications in a cost effective way has meant the military is looking at COTS options such as 3G/4G solutions among others. New forms of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are also being developed, which allow networks to form, break up and reform as positions change.

In this issue, we also talk to key figures in the TETRA + Critical Communications Association about the future of mission critical networks and profile Norway’s Nødnett TETRA network – the first to deploy the TEDS enhanced data services standard.

We also look at why the UHF2 band in the UK needs to be protected for business radio users and examine a Simoco Xfin network for Murray Irrigation in Australia. Finally, we highlight some network advances in the shape of Adax’s virtualised 4G core in a box; UK Broadband’s use of Huawei’s enhanced LTE proposition and Devicescape’s virtual Wi-Fi network.
