Golf will make a long-awaited return to the Olympic Games in 2016, as the best players in the world head to Rio to compete in the first Olympic golf tournament in 112 years. In the lead story in issue 45 of Golf Course Architecture, Adam Lawrence takes a look at what to expect from the tournament, Gil Hanse’s course design, and considers the importance of the event being a success for golf as a whole.

In the tee box section, we take a look at the new holes on the Ailsa course at Trump Turnberry, as well as looking at the latest work at Royal Portrush as it prepares for the Open Championship in 2019. We report back on recent EIGCA and ASGCA annual meetings, and also speak to Forrest Richardson about a new project in Arizona.

Rees Jones explains the architectural importance of the two course at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey, designed by AW Tillinghast, and John Sanford discusses the challenges and opportunities that present themselves when building course on landfill sites.

We also report on a new six-hole course under construction in Hong Kong, visit Christian Althaus’ first solo design at Hofgut Georgenthal in Germany, and learn more about a five year plan to improve Strandhill Golf Club in the west of Ireland.
