Just a quick glimpse of this issue’s main headline speaks of the new technologies that are taking the car industry by storm. When we think of car design, we visualise the body of an automobile, that external layer of metal that gives a car its form. Of all the facets of automotive design that have changed over time, differences in body style are the most drastic. As car engines became more powerful, cars got faster, and there was a need to reduce drag, making the vehicle more efficient.
Cars these days are full of high-tech materials that ensure a long life for the individual components and make the car safe to drive. These materials are also less weighty, which reduces consumption levels. A new technology featured in the Metal Cutting Equipment section shows a new machining equipment that is tailor-made for hard turning. Its design brings a number of advantages to the machine’s particular, highly demanding field of application.
The latest in a continuing series of research studies strongly suggests that steel auto body structures in the near future can be as lightweight as today’s aluminium bodies, while meeting all crash performance standards and at comparable cost of current steel structures. Find out more about the study in this issue’s Material Focus section.
Along the way, cars have undergone changes in nearly every aspect, from body to design to safety features. Those changes have shaped the modern automobile, and will continue to influence its development for years to come.
