Local schools are in a game of musical chairs, scrambling to fill positions before students return. A superintendent calls police to report an alleged confrontation with a board member. A confusing and chaotic week isn't over yet, after a principal and curriculum coordinator resigned at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School. One of the biggest gatherings of wooden boats in the world happens in a few days. Three brothers are honored for their lifetime careers on the water at the Fishermen's Hall of Fame. The real “Sal” reads One Morning in Maine in front of nearly 500 people. And Island residents rally behind one of their own who is fighting cancer.

Fishing vessels roared through the Thorofare for the annual lobster boat races. We have the photos, the story, and the race results. Meanwhile, a local diver tells his incredible story of running a 7-mile underwater extension cord to Isle au Haut. Travelers take heed: The bridge is going to be down to one-way traffic for a while. Independence Day was full this year. The weather cooperated for the annual Island Community Center Stonington Six race and walk, the parade, events on the Stonington fish pier, and the traditional fireworks over the harbor. The Town of Stonington receives a $1.7 million grant to turn the old elementary school building on School Street into a hub for all sorts of community services.The annual lobster races are coming up on July 14. Workforce housing progresses, with some apartments at Oliver's Ridge due to become available later this summer. And photos of a contra dance on Isle au Haut capture folks having fun.

The 85th anniversary of the opening of the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge is our featured story this week. The bridge was closed for a short time to allow hundreds of community members to walk it. Students are in the news. The Deer Isle-Stonington High School Class of 2024 graduates, and eighth grade students at the elementary school are promoted to high school. The Maine Department of Transportation holds a public meeting to share its draft design for the Deer Isle and Little Deer Isle causeway rebuild project. MDOT's plan is to build up about 3 feet, mostly on the existing footprint. Some Islanders feel that won't be enough. And, at the old American Legion Hall in Sunset, music and more is set to return.

This is a week of school coverage. Our annual Graduation Special Section features photos and information about our local high school graduates in preparation for upcoming commencement ceremonies. A school staff member is the recipient of a special state award, and the Island schools hold a mental health day. Stonington's water main replacement project continues with granite blasting and construction expected. And a bridge walk is among the festivities planned later this month to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the opening of the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge. 

This week's news features two Islanders honored for their service to the community and leadership; a Memorial Day observance; the re-opening of a flooded restaurant; new details on financing for a possible new fire station in Deer Isle; and CSD 13 budget increases and upcoming public vote.

Governor Janet Mills visited Stonington on May 21 to stand on the waterfront and announce the launch of a new commission on climate infrastructure. The commission is charged, Mills said, to create the “state’s first long-term infrastructure plan” following all of the major winter storms. Members of the governor’s cabinet were on hand to solicit ideas from the public about priorities for the commission. Elsewhere, schools are in the news. Community School District 13 held its annual budget meeting, and the annual schools report from the Superintendent of Schools is included in this week's content. Finally, we have a feature story about the meaning of Memorial Day, plus a list of local remembrance events. 

The Deer Isle-Stonington High School Honor Parts and photos are front and center this week. Birds are also featured, as this weekend's annual Wings, Waves and Woods events highlight the birds we see and experience on our island. And, we have a story on how a potential gauge change in the way lobster carapace length is measured can affect every lobsterman and dealer on the coast of Maine. A photo shows the current length. 

You know it's spring on the island when the houses for the miniature village in Stonington return. Isle au Haut holds its annual town meeting, with “new blood” taking the helm in some town offices. Our reporter was there. And discussions are underway about the possible future uses of the Odd Fellows Hall in Stonington once the town gets the title to the Main Street building.

We are surrounded by water. What happens on or in that water affects every aspect of our island. This week, two stories highlight that relationship. In one, residents gather to learn about the Maine Department of Transportation's proposals for fixing the storm and high tide runovers on the Deer Isle Causeway. In the other, a Talk of the Towns event features local aquaculturists and others in the field discussing the future of sea farming. And, back on land, students from Sue’s School of Dance win top marks at a regional competition.

The state and federal governments have announced programs and funding for storm damage waterfront repairs. We have the details. The Island school board and school administrators are working through the annual budget process, seeking to keep programs operating while holding down cost increases for taxpayers. On a lighter note, we have a story (and, yes, a photo!) of a spring peeper, one of many aptly named chorus frogs now in full song each evening.

The near total eclipse of the sun on April 8 was witnessed by Islanders watching from their lawns, the Settlement Quarry and locations across the area, with clear blue skies perfect for viewing. Federal monies are available for Stonington Water Company improvements and the Isle au Haut Boat Services dock. We have the stories and photos.

The Maine Department of Transportation shares potential options for solving the problem of storm-related overflow on the Deer Isle Causeway and seeks public feedback. We have the story and the schematic source information. At a meeting attended by parents and the county sheriff, the Island school board explains how a threat made by a student was dealt with. The Island Nursing Home board formally announces that it will be converting the facility to senior housing. And we have a story and graphics on an area in the Gulf of Maine being proposed for a wind farm.

Island high school students attending the Hancock County Technical Center in Ellsworth win major awards in their areas of study at a state competition. One student is going on to the national competition. We have a photo and the full story. The Maine Department of Transportation plans an online presentation to announce five proposals for how to fix the Deer Isle Causeway and will seek feedback from the public. Our story covers the details and how to respond. This week's coverage also reports on federal funding to come  for winter storm repairs. And, with a near total solar eclipse coming to our area on Monday, April 8, we offer a special spread, with need-to-know details and fun facts.

There are a variety of timely stories this week. The Stonington select board looks at composting, while Deer Isle starts the process of designing a new fire station. A GoFundMe campaign is underway to replace the often photographed wharf belonging to the late Stonington fisherman Andy Gove. Gove is known along the coast for his numerous lobster boat race trophies and locally for his on-the-water rescues.

Deer Isle and Stonington held their annual town meetings on Monday, March 11. Common to both towns are substantial increases in waste disposal costs, reserve funding to build new fire stations in the future, and increases in funding requests from Island nonprofits. In Stonington, Skip Greenlaw serves as town meeting moderator, as he has done since 1988. We report on initial efforts by government agencies to provide disaster relief money to mitigate winter storm damage. And Island high school students win a state drama award.

It’s been a busy week for Island town officials. Annual town meetings in Deer Isle and Stonington are Monday, March 11. We offer a full preview of both. In the only contested race for public office in Stonington, the incumbent Selectmen outpolled the only challenger. And Stonington is once again the largest lobster port by value and poundage, while changes are occurring in the lobster population. 

People in the news this week. There are three candidates, two incumbents and one challenger, on the ballot for two open seats on the Stonington Board of Selectmen. We have interviewed them to help voters make their choices. There is a new executive director coming to the Opera House and a new managing editor coming to Penobscot Bay Press. You can see their pictures and read about their backgrounds.

If you want to leave from or go to Mountainville and Sunshine starting March 1 you will have to take a roundabout route on Reach and Fish Creek roads due to replacement construction at the Meadow Brook culvert. Our map shows the route and our coverage tells the story. The Opiate Free Island Partnership has made 26 Narcan emergency overdose or “rescue” kits available at various locations around the Island. Preparatory to going into the nuts and bolts of their annual budgeting process, the CSD School Board has affirmed re-appointments to positions and the need for major support for maintenance and plant improvements. A Go-Fund-Me effort has raised enough funds so that Dockside Books and Gifts, which was totally destroyed in the January 10 storm, can be rebuilt. Jack Scott wraps up the varsity girls basketball team’s season with a note that they will be in the tournament again this year. Want to know what the planned road improvements are? The subject of short-term rentals and their effect on the availability of affordable workforce and year-round housing comes up at a recent Stonington select board meeting. Realtor Morgan Eaton attends and presents a detailed proposal to change some of the terms and details in the current ordinance to better provide for those needs. The board does not take any action. In Deer Isle, the select board hears from nonprofits requesting placement on a special secret ballot as part of next month’s town meeting process. And we have a short story on the recent bird count organized by Isle au Haut School.


February starts with a busy news week. Many of the stories are about fisheries and waterfronts.
Topics include: a pending change in the lobster gage; right whale location research; storm damage and wharves; and a visit by a FEMA team. There is extensive coverage about the Island Women Speak event at the Opera House.

In the aftermath of the January 10 and 13 storms, our coverages shifts to the continuing cleanup, assessment of damage, and identification of aid for recovery.
