Standup Journal—online and in print—is rich with stories, ideas, occasional advice, tall tales of special, even sacred, places to paddle, and sagas of the true characters of sup. We are the “modern hippy bus” for standup paddling. Wildflowers and sage hang from the rear view mirror, seashells adorn the dashboard…and LOTS of boards and paddles live on our roof racks. We unearth the grizzle, glow and glory of the personalities that make up the fabric of our sport—women and men, young and old, on all continents. You are the grassroots spirit of standup paddling. We move forward with love. Love for our fellow paddlers…love for the day-to-day awareness and exciting progression of our sport…stoked to peek around the corner at the next months, and years ahead!        

The Next 10 Years of Wanderlust and Light // By Glenn Dubock 
Somewhere in my first decade on this planet I read an article called “Seven Solitary Secrets.” It was a simple tale, lavishly illustrated with enticing yet unidentified surfing locations that encouraged the reader to seek out the waves not ridden just off the roads less traveled. Did the trick; it set me on a wanderlust for fun and photography that has not let up for several decades.
 
I now want to challenge our happy, growing family of paddlers to take this 10-year-old “child” we know as standup paddling and show it the world—to not follow the herd instinct, but rather to look around every roaring bend in the river, search every mystic headland of the coast, explore behind that tall stand of trees on the far side of the lake.

Who among you will join me as we seek to find our own solitary secrets?

Send us some photos of where you’ve been—no need to say exactly where it is if you don’t want to. Feel free to act like a kid again; a 10-year-old out discovering a whole new world. This photo annual is a celebration of that spirit of wanderlust, a tribute to our photographer friends who seek out the light in all those far corners of our liquid dreams. -Glenn

How well I remember my first flight on a jet airplane. It was 45 summers ago (please, no jokes about the pilot Orville and his flight attendant named Wilbur). I raced through my high school graduation ceremony. The party at my parent’s house in Pasadena went by fast. 

I gladly accepted cash from aunts and uncles who shook my hand not knowing how immediately—as in dawn of the next day!—I’d be putting their generosity to work…ok, to play. With the airline ticket my parents gave me (for successfully staying alive for 17 years, I guess), my destination was Lihue Airport, Kauai, where my big bro John had a house and an unlimited supply of surf awaiting me. I insisted on a window seat. None were available, so in desperation I conjured up a minor fib about being claustrophobic—likely to hurl in Technicolor as soon as the plane took off. No way was I gonna miss a window view for 5 hours of flying. 

I was positive I’d catch a glimpse of some secret, magic island, a whale, a dolphin, a shark or some weird creature on the wing like in that hideous Twilight Zone episode. I pressed my nose to that window the whole way, even though about all I saw was cotton candy clouds with the occasional glimpse of ocean.  -Dubock

As we began producing this “10 Years a Sport” issue, I didn’t think it was possible to become nostalgic over something that’s barely a decade old. But I was feeling a happy bit misty-eyed to see how much our young sport and our heroes have grown; heck, world wave champ Izzi Gomez was in second grade when the sup cat got outta the bag in 2007! A lot has changed, but what has stayed the same is that it really still is all about just going paddling.

At several points in every surfer’s and standup paddler’s life comes that moment when it’s sunny, your friends are going to the beach, and the forecast is perfect—and your to-do list has to shrink instantly. I slapped the laptop lid closed with a snap, pushing myself away from my desk like a sniper going for the kill… except that all that I was assassinating today was a spreadsheet. Computers are great…when you turn them off! Today, I’d determined, was going to be an off day. Now I don’t mean one of those days off you book a year and a half in advance with your employer. This was an off day that has no official terms or conditions—a clandestine mission…the denial of any work. To justify my quick escape, I recalled one of those glorious, life-affirming pieces of advice someone had copied from someone, who had copied it from someone else on the internet: “Your kids will remember the days they went to the beach more than the days they watched TV.” It’s good advice—and global

The Impact Zone: Photographers live in the impact zone. While the surf crowd defines this as the area where a wave of consequence will unleash its breaking energy, photographers will tell you different. They will point out that shooting beneath a thundering waterfall on a placid pond will certainly get your attention. 

They will tell you about the time they almost took their last snap on the way to a watery grave while pinned to a creek bed in two feet of turbulent rapids. They will recount the incident where the ice beneath their tripod legs started to crack like ice cubes in a cocktail glass when the hard liquor splashes into it.

The other impact zone that image-makers will talk about the medium where all of their hard work sees the light of day. They know that the images they have labored over can and will have a strong impact…now and in the future.What you see on these pages today will become a visual reference point for future generations of standup paddlers to look back upon and either hoot or marvel at the way things were.

Hi Everybody,
It continues to amaze me. Our sport is SO expansive—Yoga, flatwater, rivers, fishing, crossings, downwinders… and what I personally cherish most of all: surf. Try as I might, as the editor of Standup Journal I have to bend over backwards not to overdo it with the rich surf photos and stories that pour in about wavehound sup adventures around the world.

Honestly, if we were just a sup-surf mag, heck that would be so easy. But I love it all! There’s nothing like an autumn evening paddle with Joyce along a quiet New England lake; golden leaves reflecting on glassy water, and all you hear is the dipping of your blade in the water and droplets trickling off the back.

Standup paddling in a crowded California lineup is a hard sell. That is a fact. I paddle surfed yesterday at a very crowded spot. Positioning myself just below the main peak, I took off on waves that swung wide. I also picked up the leftovers, the waves from the bowl that nobody made. Yes, standup paddle surfing in my crowded hometown break is all about making lemonade out of lemons. I’m surfing lesser-quality waves than those at the top of the lineup, but I’m still snagging my fair share of fun little nuggets. Just minding my own beeswax, humming along, enjoying the solitude of being content with the less than desirable as I go. Imperfection can be sublimely sweet.

If you go out and kill yourself in huge surf because you read our Heavy Water issue, it’s not my fault!

As most salty dogs get older, we tend to follow advice that Gerry Lopez gave a few years back on the pages of Standup Journal. In a story about a big day on the Oregon coast, Gerry cautioned would-be big-wave chasers to “Live to surf tomorrow, not like there is no tomorrow.” But that’s not the mantra of a small handful of elite big-wave sup surfers. These guys and women have ice in their veins and that thousand-yard, searching-the-horizon-for-the-next-huge-set stare in their eyes.

Coming Home to Santa Cruz Greeted by an Epic, Surprise West Swell.  It was January, 2012—Joyce and I were happily ensconced in Standup Journal’s winter HQ: a little cottage we’d rented on Depot Hill, Capitola, California, where I’d grown up as a surfer.

I love that standup paddling is not a surfing sport, though surfing is one of the things you can choose to do. It’s not canoeing. It’s not kayaking. And that’s the buzz: Sup is unique and universal.

I look into the future and dare to dream… 5 years, then 10, then 20, then 50, then 100… then 200 years. I have a vision. This sport is standup paddling and it stands the test of time. It is the sum of great activities yet is not exclusively any one of them. It’s not racing. It’s not competition. It is the joy of sharing the water. It is sup.

Today, people are standing on a sup board for the first time, and they are falling in love right now. It’s out of our hands.

Fall is For Lovers… and Paddling with Your Family

Hi Everybody,
Stand up paddle boarding is one of the first sports I’ve done where I can actually talk to the one I’m with. I’ve run marathons and done a lot of biking, hiking and kayaking; none of which allow you to be close enough to really “be” with one another. But via standup, Clay and I paddle in the evenings off our home on Suncook Lake, New Hampshire… actually enjoying a quiet conversation.

You can make it whatever you want: a peaceful paddle or a cranking downwinder. You can bust out and paddle as hard as you can, or try a yoga pose—standup has changed my life. I never go anywhere with my board that someone doesn’t ask “What are you doing?” Followed by, “Where can I get one of those?”

One of the best things about this fabulous new sport is that my son Adam (our graphic artist), and my grandchildren love it. Nicholas, who is 7, graduated from a surfboard to “Grammy’s cruiser” to my raceboard in one week.

A family gathering that was once only a sit down dinner at the table now also includes a sunset sup ‘round the lake—catching up while paddling together far into Fall’s Indian Summer days. Standup paddling and talking with loved ones… it works! Standup works.
