It’s Performance Shootout time, and for the 2017 installment we selected 12 of the very best sportscars from the last year and pitted them against each other on the Western and Northern Cape’s most beautiful – and technically challenging – mountain passes, timed their laps at Killarney Raceway in the hands of SA driving genius Deon Joubert, and performance tested them at Saldanha Airfield. One would emerge victorious as Performance Car of the Year … Can you guess which vehicle it is?

The performance thread runs throughout this issue of CAR, with a first drive of the new Mercedes-AMG E63 S, a guide on buying a classic BMW 635 CSi and what sportscar you should get second-hand.

Flipping the script, we also try the Toyota C-HR light crossover for the first time, experience BMW’s new 5 Series on the roads of Portugal and test a bevy of light and compact crossovers and SUVs.
