Big fish are there for the taking if you play your cards right.
WITH just a week before the rivers close, time is running out if you want to catch some barbel.
The good news, though, is that the fish will be in top condition now and given favourable conditions, barbel can be every bit as catchable now as they are at the start of the season.
The key to catching has to be timing. Look out for mild weather on the long-range forecast and try to time your trips to when the river is carrying a little extra water. With the days lengthening, try short after-work sessions. The best time to fish is from 6pm until 9pm, when barbel really come on the feed.
