At the recent Pet Summit, I met many interesting people, and what heartened me very much was a young mother who let her little daughter go up to the exotic creature booth, encouraging her to interact with the geckos and pythons and with an adorable bearded dragon.
Other moms were drawing back in repulsion, telling their little boys to “stay away, that’s dirty/kadiri (disgusting)!” What terrible things to say in front of the people at a booth that was working hard to educate the public about exotic pets!
But this lovely mom, when I asked her permission to take a photo of her tot with the bearded dragon, told me that she wanted her daughter to meet as many animals as she could. Words failed me; I wish more parents were like this wonderful mother, with a truly open mind to all kinds of creatures and the kind of education no school can ever give!
I also met members of the MMDA K9 Search and Rescue Unit, and their first words to me were, “We’re always looking for volunteers.”
